Description: :Story by Claire RivronThe walls of Souths B wing, lined with adaptations of famous paintings, offer inspiration forpassersby. Students gain inspiration from a variety of sources, but often it is in these B wingclassrooms where they are able to find new outlets for their creativity. For senior Rachel Beyer, her inspiration to study photography came from her family. Mygrandpa was a photographer, she said, and he [has] always encouraged people in the familyto get into it. Beyer took photography the first year it was available, as a sophomore, andsince has taken Advanced Photography.Beyond their initial interest, many students chose to continue in the arts. Junior Dacia Elkins, also in Advanced Photography, explained its appeal, It gives you a chance to express yourself, she said, I really enjoy going out and taking pictures, and then coming back and developingthem; it makes me feel like Ive accomplished something. Others had preparation for careerinterests in mind when taking art classes at South. Senior Branden Robbins took Drawing I thisyear with the aim of becoming an architect. He was given projects on many different styles ofdrawing, including one on designing architecture. With many varied projects in and outside of class, students in art classes, from ceramics tostained glass, were able to explore new ways of expressing themselves and had fun in themeantime. Its not so much academic. Itsmore fun, more relaxed. You can just sit downand draw and have fun, senior BrandenRobbins said. Elkins added, I want to keeptaking [black and white] pictures. Itsexpressive. You can take something ordinaryand turn it into something completelydifferent.Pouring chemicals into his canister, junior NickBehney (right) processes his film.Photography students learned the process ofdeveloping film as they discovered the art oftaking pictures.48 Scatemics
