Mr. Greg Mongold, math,played in a rock n roll band at dancesafter home football and basketballgames. Ms. Kareston Hall, math,performed in the RCA Dome with herCastle High School marching band.As teachers they have witnessedfirst-band the many changes thathave evolved over the past fewdecades. Today, they compare theirown high school experiences with thoseof students at Bloomington HighSchool South.Teachers feel students today enjoyfreedoms that they sometimes takefor granted. Hall remembers alimitation on the number of piercingsstudents could have when she was inhigh school. Also, there are now moreextra-curricular options availablethan there were. When Mrs. BarbCooksey, science, graduated in 1971,there were no sports offered for girls.How lucky girls are now to be ableto be involved in sports, Cookseysaid.Mrs. Phyllis Clapacs, English, feltthat high school now is probably nomore academically challenging, but itis harder in terms of social pressures.Hall agreed that students are forcedto grow up faster today as a resultof all their responsibilities. Bailey hodtrouble in high school because sheattended three different schools. Butshe says this experience definitelyhelps her now with students who orestruggling, especially those in ProjectPride.Thinking back on their high schoolexperiences, teachers generally wishthat they had seized moreopportunities. They urge students otBHSS to take advantage of theopportunities that are available tothem. Mongold wishes that he hadnot been so bashful... [and could] talkto people more easily. Clapacs aduicefor BHSS students was not [to] beso stressed about the little thingsand [to] be more optimistic. Cookseysaid, Life does not end after highschool.Students are a lot more involved inactivities outside of the classroom now,Mr. Paul Farmer, science, said.Students have lost their naivete,Carla Gardner, English, said of highschool today compared to when shewas in school.56 AGAPFFI/GP> |
