On the RunBoys track teams depth and desire help themto achieve winning record ~by Claire BarwiseHitting the sand, junior Aeron Taylor finishes his longjump attempt at a home meet versus Warren Central. The Panthers lost 77-55, but won every other dualmeet on the season. While nearly all themembers of the track teamplaced well during meets, a fewrose above the rest when itcame to consistentlyoutshining the opposing team.(Sophomore) DanKonstanski and (junior) JesseDavis usually won their eventsby a lot. They trained in the offseason and did three-mileruns in the morning, sophomore Nic Strauser said.Seniors Jason Dorais andteam captain Adam Hayes wereeverything team leaders weresupposed to be when it cameto pumping up and supportingthe team. They always got thingsgoing and encouraged people tokeep on task. And it wasntjust motivating other people, either, they were really hardworkers themselves, junior BJDelacruz said. The team was very close;many members of the teamwere on the cross-countryteam and were good friends.Everybody else just got alongreally well.I love the meets, but alsothe team ... were kind of like afamily, were all really close.Running can be hard, and itmakes everything else easierin comparison, junior JesseDavis said.Members of the teamgathered together at a homethe night before a meet fordinner. In addition to this, theteam had a tradition ofheading to the middle of thefootball field during the two-mile race to cheer on runners. It was very beneficial to sitdown with the team and beable to talk about stuff otherthan track and just hang out, senior Jon McDonald.Creating a sense of unityamong a team of 46 boys mayseem like a near-impossibletask, but the boys track teammanaged it with surprisingsuccess. We had a rule that duringmeets everyone had to wearsomething that said South onit, and we would always do awarm-up lap and hopefully ... avictory lap together, juniorBruce Saulter said. The desire to beatBloomington North was strongin most sports, but it wasespecially evident among theboys on the track team. ThePanthers defeated the Cougarsin their dual meet and alsobeat them in the ConferenceIndiana meet.I had never beat thembefore in my high school careerand I really wanted to, so ourwin was really exciting, seniorJason Dorais said.Justin BanksJustin BanksAdd it upWarren Central: 77-55 LColumbus North: 85-47 WMartinsville: 102-30 WSouthport: 95-37 WBloomington North: 69-63 WConference Indiana: 3rd out of 10Sectional: 2ndRegional: 3rd= 4-1Justin Banks234 Gothic •MAY JUNE 2000 |
