Many business owners inNorth Carolina were not even able to get to thedoors of their businesses for over a month after20 inches of rain fell in differentparts of the state. At least 42 peoplewere reported to have died fromFloyds wrath. Over 2,700 peoplewere forced to stay in shelters afterthe disaster. Many people fromacross the country responded to theplea for help of the victims of Floyd, including family members and rescueorganizations. Junior Clay Collisonknows first hand how urgent theneed for help was, as he went toSouth Carolina to help out hisfamily. My Mom lives in Charlotte,North Carolina, and my brotherlives in South Carolina where hegoes to college. He was evacuatedout of his apartment two or threedays before the hurricane was supposed to hit. Ittook nine hours to get to Charlotte (its usuallythree hours). We had to transport all my brothersstuff in his apartment to my moms because whenhe came back, his whole apartment was underwater. The entire coast of Charleston wasdestroyed, and both North and South Carolinaschools and universities were closed for a coupleof weeks, Collison said, by Martha PayneHoosierfestBringing together the people of Bloomingtonthrough live music as a welcome-back to IUstudents, the 12th annual Hoosierfest was held onAug. 28. Entertaining an expected 10,000 people, seven local music groups began playing at 2 p.m.The night ended with the Chicago-based FreddyJones Band playing new music from their albumLucid that was released early this year.I have the Luc/dCD,they (theFreddyJonesAndyGohBand) were better in concert. I went toHoosierfest to see them, senior Sarah McNabbsaid.Hoosierfest was held three weeks earlier thisyear in order to make room for the Lotus Festivaland an IU home football game.I remember it being a lot later last year, butthere were still more people there this year, junior Stephanie Benjamin said, by Martha PayneRumor of the IssueLauren Demmingby Jessee HahnThe most recent rumor circulating seemed to bethat next year students would return to an alltraditional schedule. When questioning AssistantPrincipal Mrs. Rebecca Earle Oct. 26, 1999,1 foundthat the answers to our scheduling questions wereonly beginning. The schedule for next year is still undecided and iffy. A task force made up ofadministrators, teachers, parents and students from both North and South have beenorganized in order to resolve and decide our schedule for next year. I dont think thatgoing into this process anyone has a specific schedule in mind. We are all just going to tryto assess the needs of the majority of students and staff, and will go from there. We hopeto decide on a schedule for next year around February or March to make things easierwhen creating the schedules for students nextyear. Our desire is to have only one scheduleinstead of multiple ones. This might happen nextyear, but it could also just be a step in thatdirection. We also have to realize that whateverschedule is decided upon, it will not please-/ everyone, but it will be the schedule that tries toaccommodate the majoritys needs, Earle said.auren Demming:: Perm Station ::The doors to Penn Station opened Sept. 1 lastyear. The restaurant was welcomed in by manypeople hungry for a good sub and a friendlyatmosphere. Penn Station was known for itssubs, which are grilled and served warm, notcold. One of its signature items was the Phillycheesesteak sub. Many students agreed thatthe food was definitely worth any wait.Penn Station was not only popular because ofits great food; it was also an excellent place forstudents to work.Penn Station is a great place to work at.Everyone acted like my friend before I everstarted working, or they have become my friendnow. The managers are chill and the food iskicking! Im really lucky that I could find such adecent place to work at for my first job, seniorAnna Schulte said. by Jessee Hahn38 GothicSEPTEMBER OCTOBER 1999 |
