I think Ifell in love withbiking the first timeI got on a bike, about three monthsago, when I fell twoinches from thebike store. I knewthen that I hadbeen presentedwith a newchallenge. Sincethen, thanks to DeCycles, among other bike groups, Ihave biked in a total of sevencountries. Along with myteammates, I have become aworld champion. I have riddenacross the Alps and theAppalachian Mountains and intotal I have ridden 3,007.6CourtesyIn June, on the first half of the Trans-American DeCycles trip, seniorJessica Dreher (far right) rides down the road. On the first half theyrode over 2000 miles, from Huntington Beach, California toBloomington, Indiana. In early August, as a symbolic end, the DeCycles dip their front tiresin the Atlantic Ocean at Atlantic City, New Jersey. Many studentstraveled coast to coast, a total of 3,100 miles, with the Trans-AmericanDeCycles.miles. Every morning Id wakeup of my own free will and ridebecause of one feeling. Its thefeeling you get right after youfall, that picks you up again. Its when you exceed your ownexpectations and then realizeyou can do anything. Its thefeeling that you are as big apart of the world as the largestmountain, and that the onlything holding you back is yourown will. Anyone who has everfallen can tell you that itwould have hurt more hadthey just given up. And anyonewho has conquered amountain can tell you whatits like to be on top of theworld. I started biking becauseI love being part of the feeling.I continue to bike because itmakes me feel as if I have nowreached the summit of mypersonal mountain and canimagine no higher precipice.26 GothicJULY AUGUST 1999
