Members ofthe pom squad and local churchcommunities around the area spent theirsummers either practicing for the yearahead or confirming their faith. The Pom squad went to UniversalDance Camp Aug. 1-4 on the campus ofIndiana University. We had to go to campso we could qualify for Nationals inOrlando at the end of January, and so wecould bond as a team and learn newtechniques and routines, freshmanShannon Smith said. The team collectively attended thecamp as an introduction to a long yearahead and to get to know each otherbetter. Everyone becomes closer on thesquad because we spent so much timetogether there, freshman Kristin Kearneysaid. Those students from local churcheswanting to enrich their beliefs and helpout the less fortunate took part in camps. Two such camps were Summer in theSon and West Virginia Work Camp.Three Bloomington churches took part inSummer in the Son: Sherwood OaksChristian Church, Southside ChristianChurch and Northside Christian Church. The camp was in Grayson, Kentucky, andeach session ran from Sunday throughFriday.(At camp) we slept in dorms, listenedto bands play and I met a lot of newpeople there. Everything had to do withreligion, senior Elly Wingard said. It wasa lot of fun in general, and it was nice tobe in a good atmosphere like that and nothave to worry about anything else.Junior Sarah Shelden and otherstudents from First Presbyterian Churchwent to Work Camp. They helped out thelocal residents by furnishing housing. They built decks and painted. We justhelped out wherever we could. Cowen(WV) is really impoverished so it felt goodto help them out, Shelden said.Although each experience wasdifferent, students seemed to flock tocamps throughout the summer and will, most likely, continue to do so.23i |
