SummiReaThis summer, the sound of paperturning, page by page, was what allhonors English students heard. It wasrequired that anyone taking an HD orAP English course read a novel overthe summer. The reading list includedAnna Karenina for seniors, TheBostonians for juniors, LesMiserables for sophomores and achoice of Into the Wild, Joy Luck Cluband I Know Why the Caged Bird Singsfor freshmen. Some students found the requiredreading to be an enjoyableexperience and a good way to passthe time.Reading during the summerenhanced my vocabulary and gave mesomething positive to do on boringrainy days and when traveling, seniorKindra King said.Students with summer jobs foundthat the required reading got in theway of their work and took awayfrom their free time. The program shouldnt becontinued because we are gettingby Tiffany Schopmeyerjobs and becoming moreindependent, sophomore KirbeeMclntire said. For many students it was not thatthe idea of summer reading was bad,but rather that the novel was a poorselection. Being forced to read aspecific book made it hard forstudents to enjoy it.Summer reading is a good idea, but the books chosen are heavy topicsfor the summer. They should be funand light, senior Jenna Kloostermansaid.Whether or not summer readingis necessary may always be an issue, but teachers continue to see it as avaluable experience for their students.Students should be pushed intoreading things they normally wouldntread, Mr. John Jeffries, English, said.Students released a collective sighof relief as they completed theirassigned readings before theimpending Aug. 19 deadline. Althoughmany felt the task was tedious, a senseof accomplishment came fromcompleting the project.6 Im getting out of here!Students share the classes they chose to drop at the start of theyear and their reasons for doing so...:• Internship, I dropped itbecause Ive been in choir forsix years and I wanted tofinish my last year.—senior Michelle Thompson• I wanted to drop ceramicsbecause none of my friendswere in it.—senior Tim Tracy• I dropped peer tutoringbecause I didnt request thatclass, so I became a T.A.(teachers assistant) instead.—freshman Isaac Emerson• Aerobics, I dropped itbecause I had it first thing inthe morning, and I didnt wantto get all sweaty and nasty andthen have to get ready again.—sophomore Ashley Farrell* I dropped AP Chemistry. More thanwe expected. I cant say its a popular class. Its the first time its ever been offered. I thinkpeople wanted that Core 40 physical sciencewithout taking chemistry or physics so theyretaking this first. -Mrs. Barbara Seal, sciencey , What do you enjoy most about the class?A: The labs ... the humidity lab where you usematches, hot/cold water and roomtemperature water, drop the match in a bottleand screw on the lid.
