From speaking in front of the class to taking tests, studentsdeal with stressful situations during the course of a dayIts a normal Monday morning in Mr. Petrysthird period trigonometry class. Students arecalm and things are going smoothly until Mr.Petry announces a quiz on Thursday, wordswhich are followed by loud moans from the class.Several students felt stressed by the amount of workthat school presented. Quizzes werent the only sourceof stress though, as many students also felt pressurefrom final exams, presentations, group work and tests.Tests really stress me out because they count formost of my grade,Final exams caused even greater anxiety than testsdid. Usually finals counted just enough so they couldswing a grade up or down. Also, since finals coveredmore material than regular tests did, they had extra stressattached to them. Finals stress me out the most. Theycount for a big portion of my grade and I really haveto study for them, sophomore Megan Parmenter said.Presentations and group work were also big stressfactors. Some students^&foKBtW&aK*Unsafesophomore Andrew Powers said. For other students, it was only after a test when theyfelt the stress. I only become stressed by tests if I dobad on one. Then I know that I have to work extrahard to do even better on the next one, junior MaryHill said.Since BHSS was on the traditional six period schedule,it was possible to have up to six tests in one day. Thiscaused even more stress among students. It is difficultwhen teachers dont collaborate their tests. Days whenyou end up taking several tests are the most stressful, junior Hillary Lodge said.enjoyed talking infront of the class rather than listeningto a teacher talk, but others willingly chose an hour oflecturing over a three-minute presentation. I get sonervous when I have to give a presentation. I startshaking, Hill said. Some students thought that group work meantsocializing, goofing off and having some free time. However, when a grade was determined by the work agroup produced, then they had to start to take the taskmore seriously. Sometimes relying on someone otherthan yourself can be more of a burden than a help. Somany people arent dependable, Lodge said.By Kim ValentaCharloette SchroederGothic .. $c<zde*wvG4- |
