Description: new schoolet reactionsBy: Claire BarwiseRumors flew near the end of the 1999-2000 school year. Thedetails varied, but the topic was always the same: stricter rulesthe following school year. Many of the rumors proved to be truewhen such changes as new definitions of acceptable dress , tightersecurity, banned backpacks and different parking and hall passpolicies greeted students in the fall.Although initial opposition was fierce, many students adjustedsoon after classes were underway. Its not that big of a deal, junior Dan Eno said, and as far asthe dress code goes, its not like the girls were going to get nakedanyway.Despite familiarity with the new rules, many still harboredresentment midway through the school year. Students had aparticularly hard time adapting to the policy of having securityguards in hallways, which prevented students from going to theirlockers or other areas during lunch. Its ridiculous. Im legally an adult, and I still cant go up acertain stairwell, senior Angie Kermmoade said. The dress code, which banned such items as shorts above midthigh and spaghetti strap tank tops, was designed to eliminateconfusion regarding what appropriate dress meant to differentpeople, Principal Mark Fletcher said. However, it proved to be atender topic for students.Individual self-expression is essential in the growth anddevelopment of a teenager. Restricting anything that allows astudent to be creative without harming anyone seems ludicrous, senior Rebecca Bowman said.Smiling for the camera, seniorRob Bragman gets his picturetaken for the student IDs,designed for security reasons.u^_J Gothic :: ^w^r/^Brett WhiteA car backs away from thetraffic gates that were createdto control students comingand going during the day.
