Silly string, bubbles and beachballs adorned thecrowd and poeticwords radiated fromthe podium atAssembly Hall June6, as members of thesenior class gatheredfor the 125th annualCommencement. The speakerswords of goodbye, thanks and courage, spoken by JohnChambers, GeetaKharkar, TravisThickstun, JeffSmith and BillLaughlin, wereperiodicallyinterrupted by theappearance of beachballs, colored sillystring and bubblesfloating between thegraduates. Mostseniors agreed thatthese items camewith good intentionsand were justtradition.I think its goodto keep up withtradition, but it couldhave been timedbetter. Not in themiddle of peoplesspeeches, becausethat was just rude, but when they weregiving out diplomas. That would havebeen better, seniorMarc Muehling said.Keeping the beachball and silly stringtradition alive wasone of the onlytraditions that werestill thriving atgraduation. Probablyone of the mostdifficult and obviouschanges was themove of theceremony from theI.U. Auditoriumbecause of renovationto the I.U. AssemblyHall. However, theseseniors decided thatit was theirgraduation, and theywould make the bestof it. Like most of theseniors, KatieHershey agreed thatat first disappointment was the mainfeeling from theclass, but aftergraduation planningstarted, determination soonreplaced skepticism. It wasnt as badtasselsas I thought it wouldbe. I was prettydisappointed at first, but it all turned outso wonderful in theend, Hershey said.Among all thebroken traditions oneof the most missedand loved was thecelebration ofgraduation byjumping in anddancing with themermaids inShowalter Fountain. The fountain held avast importanceamong all seniors, and the fact that itwas taken away bythe relocation wasdisappointing. However, approximately 50-60seniors found a wayto include a jump inthe fountain despiterestrictingcircumstances.I wanted to keepup the traditiondespite the changes,Hershey said.Yet anotherchange in theceremony was thatSenior Class SponsorMr. Richard Cardis, social studies, madea speech to the classinstead of Mr. BillLumbley.
