TheAmerican-Legion-sponsored event washeld at Indiana State Universityin early June. Hoosier Girls State wasalso held at ISU for a week duringJuly. Although the girls did no marching, they performed drills in salutingthe flag.Hoosier Girls State and Boys Stateare a mock state government. Eachdelegate is appointed to either theNationalist or Federalist party and toa fictitious city. Each city elects itsown officials and passes enforceablelaws.Delegates learn the duties of thevarious elected officials and learn toappreciate the responsibilities accordedeach.Students engaged in a wide varietyof activities during the summermonths. Some sought employmentwith local businesses and recreationalfacilities. Others chose to spend theirleisure time with activities such asswimming, camping, or playing tennis.Several students spent their vacationtraveling in foreign countries, samplingcultures other than our own.TOP: Summer of 74 found biking a favorite of many, including Dave Shaw. MIDDLE: Pompettes became a close knit groupat camp. BOTTOM: After a long, hardweek, cross country runners pose for picturesbefore returning home from summer campat Hardin Ridge.Summer Activities 17
