Description:	LearningThe 1992-93 Academic De-cathalon team overcame alack of experience to end successfully with a fourth placefinish at the state competition.With an overall theme ofCultural Diversity, De-cathalon team members competed for points and medalsin subject matters such as social studies, math, science,economics, fine arts, english,as well as in speech, interviewand essay divisions. Finally,the team competed as a wholein the Superquiz where theyanswered questions on thelives of 30 international figures, such as Gandhi, MartinLuther King, Jr., and MotherTeresa.Practices were twice aweek, for a total of abouteight hours, and team members were expected to studyon their own time. Competingfirst in a preliminary scrimmage that motivated them towork harder, said seniorSacha Bernstein, they wenton to the regional and then tothe state competition.Senior Thomas Hall said ofthe activity, It was veryworthwhile. I developed goodstudy habits, and I the knowledge I gained will help me incollege.Said junior Alii Abraham,I enjoyed it.. .1 learned a lotof different things I wouldnthave learned in school and Igot to apply them.Members included: Honorssquad-Hall, Gautam Kharkar,Choo-Youn Kim; Scholasticsquad-Bernstein, Abraham,Jessica Sebeok; Varsity squad-Kate Matthen, Stephanie Mc-Cormick, Kyle Mayes.Jessica Sebeok cracks Kate Matthenup with her reading on the way toChicago.Choo Youn Kim, Gautam Kharkar,Tom Hall, Stephanie McCormick, Alii Abraham, Kate Matthen, SachaBernstein and Jessica Sebeok listenattentively as Mrs. Granich gives in-stuctions.Jessica Sebeok keels over from thestress of preparing for an academiccompetition.40 / ACTIVITIES
