Strategy and skillAny student who wantedto learn a skill, compete ingames, or just socialize withfriends could become part ofSouths chess club last year.The chess club, directedby teacher Greg Mongold,offered South students theopportunity to learn chess,meet new friends, and participate in chess tournaments. The club included alllevels of interest, from beginners to expert chess players. We have a solid groupof players, said memberAndrew Robertson.During weekly meetings,the members practicedchess. Often, guest playerswho were rated around 1500out of 2000 visited the club tochallenge members. Unlessyoure really good, dont expect to last long, cautionedSimon Lee. The club alsotook part in chess tournaments. Their major tournaments were at Terre Haute.The tournaments are fun,but they can be very stressful, Lee said. Quite a bit ofnervousness kicks in, butyou meet new people.The chess club also spenta lot of time just socializingand having fun.
