Theteachers had many goals tokeep improving.One of these goals was tokeep adding to the enrollment of students in the current math classes. Accordingto Sharon Goh, head of themath department, studentsdo it to get into the college oftheir choice. Many teacherswanted more students tolearn and benefit from mathematics.The second of these goals,according to Goh, was to beable to add to the mathematics curriculum. A math student tries to useone of the new graphing calculators.Bret Bays takes a break from therigors of math to sing a happy tune.1993 school year, one semester classes are being offered for the first time. Theseclasses, discrete mathematics and statistics and probability are among the majorchanges taking place. Iminterested in seeing how thenew classes turn out, commented junior Madeline Rivera. The rest of thesechanges include an honorsgeometry class, a new advanced math class, and acalculus class that will possibly be offered for collegecredit hours. Math is definitely not what it used tobe, added math teacher,Tom Petry.Students also agreed thatmath is not what it used tobe. Ive really got to work alot, sophomore ElizabethHickman commented.My teacher is very helpful, and when I need help, hecan help me, added freshman Jessie Mallor.One goal was met last yearwhen the math class enrollment increased. Studentstook more than the requiredcredits of math. Some wanted to qualify for a certain college, while others merelytried to increase their mathknowledge, Goh said.
