Description: Working togetherRachel Bass checks out customers at Mr. Ds.For many students atSouth, part-time jobs werea way of life. They were apart of growing up and becoming independent. Employment taught some students responsibility, andhow to survive in the big,bad world.Students with jobs werehappy when, in April, minimum wage was raised to$4.25. There was extra cashto save for college, pay forgas, or spend on the weekends. Rob Ingersoll, whoworked at Breslers IceCream Store said, My jobmoney is mainly used formy free time. Others saidthat their jobs were an essential source of funds forcollege. I keep saying thatIll save money for school.However, I need to havesome fun, I dont want towork all of the time, Christa Stone commented.By the time Friday rolledaround it wasnt hard tofind these same studentsspending some of theirearnings. Downtown, especially around Kirkwood,was usually filled withteens. Going to the movies,cruising, getting a pizza, orjust hanging out to see whowas around were the students leisure activities.Travis DeKoker shows his truefeelings while working in the mall.20 / STUDENT LIFEi
