Orchestra receives recognitionMelodious strains floatedthrough the halls of BHSSlast year. A by-stander in thegym building might haveheard Beethovens FifthSymphony, II Re Pastore(Bach), or even The FirstDay of Spring by Leroy Anderson. These varied typesof music were played by theschool orchestra. The orchestra played atthe String Spectacular, which featured grades 5-12,and performed with theBloomington Symphany Orchestra at the Youth andFamily concert. They alsoperformed a Hee-Hawshow, in which they sang, danced, played country music, and delighted the audience with jokes from thecornpatch. It was really unusual, commented conductor Jane Gouker. We didnthave to be so formal, addedviolist Clint Baker. It was achance to cut loose and havea good time. The orchestra performedat least one concert a month. And that was not all! Theyentered a state competitionin April, in the first division. Then, in May, they traveledto a concert out of state.Thats always the most exciting, because we get recognition outside of Indiana, said violinist Rebecca Conway. Its what we work forall year. The members of the orchestra raised the funds to goto that concert by themselves. One of the fundraisers was the Night of Dance,in which they played ballroom music for three hours.Lots of people came; it wasreally fun, Conway said.In everything they did themembers of the orchestraworked together. Not onlydid they strive to keep intempo and balance theirsound, they raised the moneyfor their trip. These kidsare incredible, Gouker saidproudly. The 1989-90 OrchestraEmily Selke holds her head up highas she entrances others with her violin music.ACADEMICS / 59 |
