Description: Required courseHealth and Safety, a semester course, is requiredfor all seniors graduatingfrom high school. Studentsat South usually take thecourse as sophomores. Theclass teaches students factsabout good health, allowingthem to decide what is goodor bad.The health departmentaquired a new teacher lastyear, Chris Beyers. Mr.Beyers taught health classesfor the first time last year, aswell as one of the gym classes.Students learn about anatomy, physiology, emotionsand how to deal with them,personalities, and the highsand lows of drugs. Over theLearning about nutrition, AnnaMillican realizes that her pen isnt inone of the 4 basic food groups.past few years other topicswere added to the classes.AIDS, which has been a major controversy was added tothe curriculum 88.During the year studentsfrom Indiana Universitycame to teach the membersof the health classes. Theydiscussed the importance ofmaking smart decisionsabout tobacco and drugs.They also talked about theconsequences of making thewrong decisions about thesesubstances.A public enforcement classwas added to the curriculumas well. The students talkedwith state policemen aboutmajor issues which would affect their every day life.Ryan Mull studies hard in hopes ofa good grade on his next Health test.44 / ACADEMICS
