Bang! Zip! Thesewere sounds that were commonly heard in Souths science department. The noisescame from Mr. Lumbleyschemistry class. As studentsin the class were finishing upa lab, the sounds could beheard at the end of the hall.Bill Lumbley became thenew chairman of the sciencedepartment, when Mike Rig-gle became the vice-principal. When asked whatkind of improvements thescience department neededLumbley said, The plumbing and gas lines need to befixed altogether. Renovations, which had beenplanned for 1992, were setback, making the science department wait longer fornew gas lines and plumbing.A pilot program was offered for the freshman science classes. A group ofabout 15-25 students weretaken to a vocational room,V-10. While they were therethey were allowed to workwith robotics, synthesizers,and equipment. The classwas taught by Jody Duncan.The kids are here to learnsome kind of hands on training, which should help themin the future, Duncan stated.In other areas of the science department the classesconsisted of 30 to 40 students. I liked physics, butthe classes were too crowded.Some of the class had to gointo the hallway if we did anexperiment that took up a lotof room, said Christa Stone.The science area has aneed for space Mr. Lumbley said.
