Thefirst year chemistry classesdo qualitative labs, thosethat involve seeingchanges. On the otherhand, second year focuseson auantities.Bill Lumbley, one of thechemistry teachers, feelsthat students generally enjoy his class. One of themain ideas he wants to getacross to his students is,That they can do it! Hismain goals are teachingbasic study skills and achemical understanding oftheir surroundings.The physics classes alsodo auite a few labs, 28 to30 different experiments,said Riggle. The first yearlabs are concerned withmotion, power, work efficiency of machines, andheat. The second yearclass does experiments involving air tracks and computers. Along with experiments, the physicsdepartment also participates in a bridge buildingcontest.Besides chemistry andphysics there are biology,horticulture and generalscience. All of these classes have a similar goal, forstudents to walk awayfrom the class being thebest they can be.55
