Description: Barbara Purdom is allsmiles as shedisplays her stainedglass project.Success in ArtGeared toward a betterunderstaning of art, the artdepartment gives a morecreative outlook to art and helpsstudents reach their highestpotential. Jan Elkins and ScottAckerson teach art in manycreative ways. In addition todrawing and painting, they alsoteach stained glass, silkscreening,ceramics, and photoart classes. A student canexplore and reach out to theirhighest creative potential, saidElkins. This is an additionalbenefit of art education. Thisyear, some of Souths studentswon major awards. FreshmanChris Easton said, It felt kind offunny that I could win an awardfor a class project. He placedfirst in the Martin Luther King Jr.poster contest, first in the localKnights of Pythias (a campaignagainst drunk driving) contest,and went on to win third place instate. This year South studentsdisplayed their designs at the IUFine Arts building. This is agreat honor, said Elkins. In thefuture, the art department hopesto expand the curriculum byexploring new fields oftechnology using computers.38I. -
