Description:	41 years at BHSRetirement ends careerof dedication, service1987 marks the last year that Fred Huffwill be teaching at South. After 41 years ofteaching gym, and additional time spentcoaching football, Huff feels its time toretire.After forty-one years Im ready/ Huffsaid Im going to miss a lot of things, butIm ready for it. He added with a laugh,Ill be glad to get away from the paperwork.After 41 years Im ready ... Imgoing to miss a lot of things, but Imready for it...ttHuff has been associated with athleticsin Bloomington for a long time/ he feels.He attended high school in Bloomington,and played basketball on his school team.He later attended IU, and was hired byBloomington High School in 1946 to beassistant football coach, freshman basketball coach, and health teacher. In 1947 hebecame the high school head footballcoach.When the town added a second highschool in 1964, Huff continued as headfootball coach at Bloomington South.Huff feels that he has seen a lot in hisyears with the school. It has all been veryinteresting. I have seen the whole cycle ofkids behavior problems. Through theyears I think theres been a loss of self-pride in the students—this leads to a lackof self-discipline. One of Huffs goals forhis teaching and coaching was to combatthis loss of self-pride, and so he says thathe feels very happy that many kids I havehad have become doctors, and lawyers, orhave done real well in some other way—basically, Im glad when my students goon and become good citizens.Ive really enjoyed working with thestudents and Ive enjoyed the relationships Ive had with students and teachers/ Huff went on to say. I think the bestpart of teaching or coaching is the challenge—youre in different situations everyday, and new things always come up.One of the things Ive enjoyed the most isseeing students progress; you see themcome in as freshman, and four years latertheyre seniors, and much more mature.During the 23 years Huff coached atBloomington South, he has a 154-61-31record. In addition, he coached the first 21I think the best part of teaching orcoaching is the challenge ...games of a 60 game winning streak until aheart attack stopped him from coaching in1970. His 1964 team went unbeaten, andHuff was chosen as the South Central Conference coach in 1966 and 1968. In 1976Huff was inducted into the IU football hallof fame.Retirement 129
