The club was formedin September, largely through theefforts of junior Paul Mintz.Paul had called me last year(1986) during chess regionals, wanting to enter a team in thecompetition, said club sponsorand South math teacher GregMongold, however South had nocoach or sponsor. When I receiveda job here this summer, I remembered Paul and we set up a team. The chess team finished theirseason this April at the state finals.Souths first team of Josh Stampfli,Paul Mintz, Mike Brady, and Matthew Johnson finished 17th out ofthe 32 teams in the competition. The second team for South of BrianAltop, Greg Blumenthal, RobertBosch, and Brian Crawford placed31st.Im very pleased with ourteams success, Mongold said.We did pretty well for our firstyear. I hope we can continue atthis same rate next year.Shush to successThe Bloomington South Ski Clubis a new club that was formed thisyear for all interested skiers. Theclub, and Ed Morris and SteveStein, with English teacher LisaDaerr as the clubs sponsor, recrutied approximately 100members in its first year.According to Stein, the club hasbeen a success. We had morepeople involved than we had planned on. Since it was the first yearfor the club, just getting it startedwas a success. While the club had been planning a trip to a Michigan ski resort, frequent trips to Ski World inNashville were the only outingsthis year. Although, the cancellation of the trip did not dim Ed Morris optimism, who was pleasedthat so many people were able toget instruction and ski time ontheir own.The main reason for starting theski club, according to Stein, wasto get people to go skiing andhave a good time. The club madeit possible for some people to goskiing who couldnt afford itotherwise.STAND in the lightDuring Drug Education Week, for two days each semester,Students Toward A New Directionmembers talked to students atNorth, South, Tri-North, and Bat-chelor about their experienceswith drugs. We attempted to get an opendialogue about drug use, saidSTAND coordinator Anthony Ar-nove. We wanted to get somediscussion, and talk about the problem honestly.Amove said the Drug EducationWeek was effective and very successful. You realize that there is aproblem; and much more needs tobe done to address it.Both Amove and Jenny Clinch,STAND chairperson for South, stressed, however, that STAND isnot an anti-drug group.STAND means just what it says.We are students toward a newdirection. Students need to take anactive part in making their highschool and community better.Among the years activities werea symbolic fast in memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. that raised $60for the Martin Luther King, Jr.Center in Atlanta, several dances,Believe It Or Not I Care (BIONIC)week, and Drug Education Week.Chess Club, Ski Club, STAND 55
