The honorsfor this unique event are heldby Michelle Whitlow and AmyMcDonald.A throw of 117 feet 4 inchesby Whitlow broke a five yearold record of 115 feet 9 inches.Less than five minutes later therecord was broken byMcDonald with a heave of 121feet 4 inches.It was really exciting tobreak the record; I felt great!And then Amy stepped into thediscus ring and my moment ofglory was short lived, saidWhitlow.When throwing for the second record, McDonald reallyconcentrated on her desire toexceed her teammates throw.I just really wanted to breakthe record, she said.What a meet, exclaimedJody Duncan, girls trackcoach. It is quite an accomplishment for an athlete tobreak the school record. Twoteam members and the samerecord twice in the same day isreally fantastic, she said.Duncan praised Whitlow forher leadership and strong performance in the weight events.It was a unique situation. Wenever knew who was going towin, Amy or Michelle, saidDuncan.They were a one-twopunch, said Kevin King, assistant track coach. We couldcount on 18 points at everymeet; during the regular seasonno one defeated McDonald andWhitlow.Beside the discus record,McDonald toppled the 400meter school record with a timeof 59.1 seconds and helped seta new school record in the1600 meter relay. Other relayteam members were KamiBrogard, Tracy Hickman andGwynn Thayer.I was really proud of thegirls, said coach Duncan.Although our dual record wasfive and five, every loss—andthey were by extremely closescores—was to a team rated inthe states top 20.Coach Duncan also cited theleadership of Lori Litten andLori Parham. Workoutleaders like Tracy Hickmanreally helped the team, shesaid. They made my first yearas head coach of track verybright.
