Description: Swimmers use natural talentAthletic ability strengthens a young teamThere were a lot of boys onthe team who didnt even knowthey could swim at the beginning of the year, said seniorMatt Kingsley about the boysswim team. But the more theyworked, the better they got; andthe better we got. The team,coached by Pedro Sainz, finished the season with a 5-6record, including a secondplace finish at SCC and a fourthplace finish at sectionals.A loss to Bedford was namedas a memorable meet duringsectionals.Pedro really wanted to beatBedford; they were the bigchallenge at sectionals. Wewere down in diving by 20points after the first half andcame back in the second half tolose by only two points,remembered Kingsley.Strong individual performances also made the yearmemorable. Junior FrancescoSanchez-Jordan set schoolrecords in both the individualmedley and the 100 yardbreast stroke. Strong performances by Jordan and seniordiver Eric Gaalaas enabled thePanthers to place 15th at thestate meet.We were a young team butwe came very close to beatingsome of the top ten teams in thestate, said Kingsley.Junior Denis Taaffe andsophomore Greg Pugh are enthusiastic about fast splits.Out of breath and tired, sophomoreEric Publow is still eager to find outthe time of the race he just swam.Gliding through his lane doing thebackstroke, sophomore Jimmy Dunning paces himself through a long conditioning practice.100 Boys Swimming
