Follow the rhythm of bandA solid three year formation, a new format, and a lot of support between theclasses made the school year a successfulone for Souths band department. This is the first year we are notbuilding a foundation, but building on analready strong foundation, band directorJonathan Gurney pointed out. We areable to spend less time on recruiting andfundamentals, and more time on music, which is very challenging this year.In the past, Souths band program consisted of a marching band, two jazz bands,a symphonic band and a concert band. This years class format took on a newlook. The marching band is pretty much thesame, but everything else has changed, explained Gurney. Instead of two jazzbands, there is now one jazz band and aclass called jazz lab, which teaches thehistory and techniques of jazz music. Thejazz lab class is mainly to prepareunderclassmen for the jazz band, butanyone can take it, said Gurney. The symphonic band was replaced by asmall, select wind ensemble. This ensemble, called The Varsity Wind Ensemble, was not unlike the Madrigals of the choirdepartment. There was also a symphonicband for those students more comfortablein large groups. The band program was also involvedwith many projects; one was hosting theBloomington Jazz Festival, a highly successful community event which includedparticpants from Indiana University. Otherprojects included participation in solo andensemble contest, All-State band, andBloomingtons All-City band. Gurneydescribed the year as very successful, and credited the success of the program tothe support band members gave to oneanother.Belting out a hot saxaphone duet, freshmenJade Toon and Donald Griffith harmonize together.Hes got the beat . . . sophomore Scot Osbornekeeps the rhythm on his drums.JAZZ BAND.
