Theheadline of performerswho rocked from 9:00a.m. until midnightincluded the Cars, MickJagger, Eric Clapton,Rod Stewart andMadonna.The organizer of LiveAid and Nobel Prizenominee Bob Geldoffwas reported to havesaid, Live Aid made itfashionable to careagain. That caringresulted in 65 plus milliondollars being raised bynot only the concert butalso records, t-shirts,books, and variousparaphernalia sold by theLive Aid Organization.Money raised was usedfor famine relief in Africa.Following the lead ofLive Aid, in the later partof August, the organizerof Farm Aid, WillieNelson gatheredtogether suchCat &mouseAfter the Little 500, John Mellencampperforms for his hometown crowd.John Terhune, Herald Telephone.performers as JohnMellencamp, KennyRogers and Bob Dylan inChampaign, Illinois tobenefit the deterioratingfinancial state of theAmerican farmer.Artists who performedcalled not only for moneyto help the impoverishedfarmer but also forpolitical action. Theyasked fans to sendletters to senators andcongressmen demandinglegislation that wouldrescue drowning farmersand foster new growth inAmericas heartland.Joan Baez capturedthe sentiments of manyparticipants of Live Aidand Farm Aid when sheopened the Live Aidshow saying, We willreach deep into ourhearts and our souls andsay that we will move alittle from the comfort ofour lives to understandtheir hurts.Libya and Americahave been playing in adeadly game of cat andmouse. Libyanorganizations have beenterrorizing Americansoverseas and the UnitedStates is determined tostop it by force.After U.S. militarysoldier SergeantKenneth Ford was killedby the explosion of ahidden bomb in a WestBerlin, Germany disco,President Reagan said,We tried quietdiplomacy. We triedpublic condemnation. Wetried economicsanctions. And, yes, wetried a show of militarymight. But Gaddafiintensified his terroristwar, sending his agentsaround the world tomurder and maiminnocents. And so, in an11-minute raid, the U.S.bombed Tripoli, Libyascapitol, from the air,causing several deathsand an uproar around theworld.Thirteen fighter-bombers that werelaunched from GreatBritain were joined by 12attack planes launchedfrom carriers in theMediterranean Sea.Together they carriedout the nightime raid.Americas NATOallies, Spain and France,refused to let Americanbombers fly over their airspace and manycountries around theworld voiced theirdisapproval of the attack.The results were 37Libyan casualties,including Gaddafis babydaughter, two U.S. Navypilots whose plane wentdown before the attack,and increased tensionbetween the twocountries.NAIN*L
