Description: IMore optimistic was the story of thefirst artificial heart. Barney Clark, aretired Seattle dentist, had contractedan unusual viral infection. Clark wastoo old for a heart transplant, and thereis no known medical treatment for hisinfection. It was these two factorsI which made him a candidate for an ar-F tificial heart.After seven and a half hours in anoperating room, the Jarvik-7 artificial heart was working inside Clark.Three key people involved with thismedical milestone were Robert Jarvik,inventor of the heart; Dr. Willem J.Kolff, founder of the company thatbuilt the heart; and Dr. William C.DeVries, the surgeon.A recipient must constantly be hooked up to a support system consisting ofa mobile heat driver, air dryer, air compressor, and emergency tanks of compressed air. The heat driver pumps andregulates air which runs the heart.At home the November 1982 elections resulted in Bloomington mayorFrank McCloskey being elected to theU. S. House of Representatives. JimYoung won the race for sheriff, andRon Waicukauski claimed a victory asprosecutor. Winning positions on theMonroe County Community SchoolCorp. Board of School Trustees wereDr. Brad Bomba, Ernest Frazo, andDavid Hayes. Tomi Allison becamemayor in January, elected by theDemocratic precinct chairmen ofBloomington.Recognition for the city came Dec.13, when Jerry Yeagley and the IU soccer team won the national championship. The game, played in Florida, wentinto eight overtimes. The Hoosiers pulled away from Duke University with a2-1 victory.On a more somber note, after 18years of presiding over Soviet militaryexpansion and an economy on the increase, Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev died at75. Newsweek quoted one woman assaying, When Stalin died, we all cried;but we dont cry anymore. Its not thatkind of an era. Brezhnevs body lay instate for three days before he wasburied.
