Description: Students dont delay procrastinatingAs a first-year chemistry student inSouth teacher William Lumbleys class, homework took on an entirely new meaning for me.Throughout my school career, I havealways saved homework for the lastminute—more of an after thought thananything else. I would do the homeworkduring the passing period before classbegan, utilizing the motto Never do nowwhat you can put off until later.Homework to me had always been busywork, something to prevent me fromwatching my favorite Cheers and HillStreet Blues. My dogma changed, however, when Ientered chemistry. The subject at handwas not in any way similar to anything Idever studied. With the exception of beingwritten in English, the book given to meon the first day of school was entirely newand unintelligible.Still, I was determined to attack mynew class with zest. I renovated my olddesk by removing all the clothes from thetop and taking the half-eaten chocolateEaster bunnies out of the drawers. Ibought a study lamp with three light intensities and some mellow music as well. Ibegan by checking the syllabus (yes, aschedule for the next 18 weeks!) andopening my new notebook to the firstpage.. . . I would have to do myhomework tonight.. . . There would be nomore putting it off until the last minute.Unfortunately my new plans backfired.I had put the half-eaten bunnies on thecorner of my desk for nourishment duringthe tedious study session. My new lampwas turned on to its brightest setting; andwhile I had been scribbling and workingmy chemistry problems (calledstiochiometry or something unintelligiblelike that), I failed to notice the browngoopy mess of melted bunnies oozing onto my Modern Chemistry book.I decided, rather than cleaning up themess, that I would become more comfortable with the subject of chemistry. Icrawled into bed after throwing theclothes back on the desk and proppingup an extra pillow. Unhappily, that is howMom found me sleeping contently thenext morning. I was late, my homeworkwasnt done, and some of my clotheswere covered with a sticky brown goo. After that, I never did quite get the ballrolling in chemistry. However, Ive vowedthat next year in advanced chemistry, things will be different. Im going to revisemy study habits, buy a larger desk, maybe even switch to non-meltingchocolate bunnies. But why think of allthis now? Ive got a couple of months andplenty of time. Ill think about it tomorrow... or next week.. . .Carol Sue HaneyCHEMISTRY teacher William Lumbley performs anexperiment in class.LEFT: Senior Brad Bowlen registers to vote.
