Wrestlers work, improve drasticallyWrestling helped me in many ways. Itgave me confidence in myself, and theoverall competition and mental preparation required great discipline . ... I learned how to work with others. All of ushelped one another out, and we all pulledfor one another.Dan ShirleyThe varsity wrestling team had abuilding year and improved drastically, according to first-year head coach BillFinley. The Panthers ended their season with a5-5-1 record, which Finley said was notvery good. He said the record was aresult of unfilled weight classes that hadto be forfeited during meets. He noted, however, that the wrestlers were verygood individually.Finley said the lack of kids hurt andthe team needed to get bigger boys forthe heavier weights. He said two losseswere very close and could have been wonif the team had not had to forfeit. According to Finley, the only meet in which thePanthers were really outscored wasagainst Warren Central, rated numberone in the state. This years team was a young one; thevarsity team included two freshmen andone sophomore who hadnt ever wrestledat the high school level. The lowerweights had six sophomores withprevious experience.Top wrestlers for the squad weresophomore Tim Afanador at 98 pounds, junior Mike Apple at 138, and senior DanShirley at 167. Afanador and Apple wenton to wrestle at state; Apple placed thirdin his weight class. Finley felt Shirley wasthe most proficient wrestler, who workedhard and provided leadership. He said theteam viewed Shirley as the type of leaderthey would walk through fire for.First-year reserve coach Phil Smith feltvery good about this years reservesquad, which ended with a record of 5-7.Although the team lacked lower weightsand upper weights and had to forfeit sixof the 13 weight classes during meets, itwas a quality team rather than a quantity team, Smith said. The wrestling team this year was compatible, according to Smith. He said theteam members had to be, because therewere only 22 of them. He noted that thewhole squad pulled for the two wrestlersgoing to state; the others were as proudas if they were the ones going on.TOP LEFT: Varsity 112-pounder Jere Cramer, sophomore, inflicts pain on an opponent in an attempt to pin.TOP RIGHT: Working to pull an opponent from theedge of the mat is varsity 177-pounder DirkRobosky, sophomore.BOTTOM: Reserve wrestler Troy Taylor works anopponent into a good position.
