TheIraqi government used poison gas to stopthe attacks, and both sides threatenedshipping in the important Persian Gulf.SpaceThe first American woman and blackbecame astronauts in 1983—Sally Rideand Guion Bluford, Jr. Also, in April thefirst repair on a satellite in orbit was madeby the space shuttle Challenger.
