Dr.Ronald Walton.Sunday, May 19, 1984, BloomingtonSouth High School graduated 315 seniorsin a ceremony at the IU auditorium.Class speaker Arija Bareikis challengedthe class by saying, George Orwellwrote about the ominous year of 1984 . . .Our parents created 1984 .... As we accept our inheritance (of 1984), we musttransform it and progress.Susan Elkins gave the invocation; andDawn Faris, the benediction. Both lookedto the future and what it holds.The Commencement address wasgiven by the Honorable Sarah EvansBarker, U.S. District Court judge, whosespeech focused on truth and how it isdefined in todays society.The first female federal judge in Indiana, Barker told her audience to betruthful on the inside so that you can betruthful on the outside. Barker also cautioned the class that it is not enough totell the truth, but we must also believe it.Barker then quoted Sigmund Freud, whosaid, If a man shows truthfulnesstowards himself, he is a success.Barker also used truth to focus onhumility by asking, Wouldnt it beliberating if we accepted the truth aboutourselves?
