Description: Publications hard worksuccessful and honoredThe 1983-84 Bloomington Southpublications staffs spent many hours producing The Optimist (newspaper) andGothic (yearbook).A new aspect to which the staffs adjusted this year was a reorganization ofthe journalism class periods. Publications1, mostly freshmen and sophomores,worked on both newspaper and yearbook assignments during fifth period.They learned the basics of reporting,editing, headline writing, and layout, aswell as some photography. Publications2, which included the top editors of bothstaffs, met sixth period, when the editorsworked to produce their respectivepublications with both individual andcooperative efforts.One of the highlights of the year for TheOptimist staff was when the 1982-83Optimist was named a Five-Star All-American newspaper and went on to beawarded a Regional Pacemaker by National Scholastic Press Association andthe American Newspaper PublishersTOP: Gene Policinski, news editor for USA TODAY,talks about his job at the Indiana High School PressAssociation convention.BOTTOM: PUBLICATIONS 2. The Optimist was alsoawarded honors at the Indiana HighSchool Press Association conventionOct. 28, and news editor Carol Haneywas elected 1983-84 vice president of theIHSPA student division. In March bothOptimist and Gothic staff members wonawards at Media Merit-thon, a statewideconference/competition for high schooljournalists sponsored by the IndianaUniversity School of Journalism.The Gothic staff worked hard from thebeginning of the year, gathering picturesand writing copy to ensure that the whole*school year would be remembered.Editor-in-chief Debbie Burke said, Thisyear the potential of the staff was incredible. I think everyone has worked hard,and well have a great yearbook.Burke continued, Weve run into thesame problems that occur every year, except this year we have more people onstaff than in the past two years. Consequently, things are running a lot moresmoothly.40 Publications
