Spring: a beautiful timefor a Carnival musicalTheatre South members discoveredthat spring is a wonderful time for a carnival when they produced their 1984 spring musical Carnival.Carnival is a musical by Robert Merrillabout a traveling European carnival. Inthe story a girl named Lili, played bysenior Jeannette Hammersley, goes tothe circus owner, B. F. Schlegel, playedby senior Bill Brand, to get a job. Whilesearching for Schlegel, Lili runs into Marco the Magnificent, played by sophomoreMatt Kingsley. Lili falls head over heels forMarco; but at the same time, Lili is secretly admired by the circus puppeteer,played by senior Alex Ellis. Soon Lili isgiven the job of helping the circus puppeteer, but the only way his love for Lili isshown is through embitterment. Thetheme of the story is how Lili teaches abitter man that life is good, even when itTOP: Jacquot, senior Nels Boerner, looks hopelessas he remembers the good years hes spent as apuppeteer assistant.BOTTOM LEFT: Cast members Howard Higgins andAndy Brand, both sophomores, sing their hearts outto perform Carnival.BOTTOM RIGHT: Sophomores Matt Kingsley, AndyBrand, and Howard Higgins perform the sword duelto save Lili.doesnt work out just the way one wantsit to.Carnival featured a large cast of 67students. Each member tried to charmthe audience with different carnival feats.The musical cast included not only thoseperforming but also the people behindthe stage, including student directors,stage managers, costume makers, setcrew, and publicity people.The show was performed April 5-7, oneweek later than originally plannedbecause of the illness of someparticipants.Junior Kim Steele, a cast member, saidthe setback was sort of a deterrent;and it was hard to get psyched up for theshow again. However, classmate BeckyRosenblum said that even though it wasa little bit of a letdown, it gave us morepractice time.38 Theatre South |
