Honor clubs active throughout yearNational Honor Society and Quill andScroll initiated new members to continuetheir recognition of excellence in scholarship and scholastic journalism.Both honor clubs have high qualifications that require time and effort.To be initiated into NHS, one must beinvolved in at least two extracurricular activities and have a grade point average of3.7 for a junior and 3.4 for a senior. Thestudents are judged in four categories:character, leadership, scholarship, andservice.For Quill and Scroll the student must bein the upper third of his/her class, mustbe a junior or senior who has worked onpublications for two semesters or asophomore who has worked on staff fortwo years, and must also have madesignificant contributions to at least one ofthe school publications.NHS participated in a variety of serviceprojects in 1983-84. One of those projects was the tutorial program, in whichNHS members were matched with otherstudents, depending on their skills andneeds. The students tutored one to twotimes a week.The blood drive, sponsored again thisyear, yielded more than 100 pints ofblood, surpassing last years donation.NHS received a plaque from the RedCross for the 1983 donation.NHS also participated in NationalEducation Week. The group recognizedeach South teacher and administratorwith an apple and a thank you note. Thesociety threw a joint birthday/Christmasparty for the residents of Meadowood (IUretirement center) and the nursing homeconnected with Meadowood.Among this years fund raisers were theselling of stockings filled with candy atChristmas, a garage sale, and the talentshow. The big fund raiser was the sale ofpocket calendars.St. Louis was the site of this yearsNHS trip. Members spent time visiting theArch, Grants Farm, and the zoo.NHS officers for 1983-84 were: BethStein, president; Dawn Faris, vice president; Debbie Burke, secretary; andBridget Droast, treasurer.Quill and Scroll was organized atBloomington High School in 1931, whenGeorge Gallup, one of the originalfounders, signed the certificate of the newchapter.
