Officerswere senior Cindy Lumbley, president;senior Liz Burrello, vice president; seniorCindy Smith, secretary; senior KirstenJacobsen, treasurer; and sophomorePam Simpson, parliamentarian.Despite difficulties that developedbecause the council had no in-schooltime to meet as it had in past years, members worked toward some majorgoals and met them successfully, according to Lumbley. One of the councils goals was to domore to benefit the school directly. Thecouncil also tried to increase communityinvolvement during the year. Another goalwas to improve the council and bring it upto par with other councils in the state. To benefit the students directly, thecouncil decorated the halls and officearea during the holiday season and set upa Christmas tree in the main lobby. In thespring the council paid to have variousjobs done, for which students indicated aneed. Also, at Christmas time the councilhelped increase its community involvement by co-sponsoring a canned fooddrive with National Honor Society, band, and OEA. The drive was very successful, netting four times as much as in previousyears; the canned goods donated weregiven to the needy. In addition, the council sponsoredHomecoming in September and thewinter sports queen contest in February. Also to benefit the school, StudentCouncil sponsored the initiation of theSADD chapter at South and severalpresentations to students on the topic ofdrugs.Toward the end of October, severalcouncil members attended the IndianaAssociation of Student Councils stateconvention at Portage High School innorthern Indiana. This gave us a chanceto see how other councils were formed, talk to students from other schools, andto get new ideas, Lumbley said. It alsomade us realize that large councils facethe same difficulties we do, she added. The most successful fund raisers werethe annual sale of computer date printouts and the sponsorship of Homecomingand winter sports dances.TOP LEFT: STUDENT COUNCIL SENIORS.
