Description: LAUREN BUERGLER, SENIORSenior Lauren Buergler is not only a student at Hoosier HillsCareer Center, shes also an explorer who found her niche in healthcarescience as a member of HOSA, Health Occupation Students of America. Its kind of like FFA, but our focus is healthcare, she said of thestudent organization with international chapters. Upon joining last year, she was elected to be a chapter representative for the State ExecutiveCouncil, and this spring she was elected as vice president of the samecouncil. At our biggest conference, which is the State LeadershipConference, I got to be on stage in front of almost twelve hundred people, which is a little scary! There, she updated the state membership on their main service project of year topromotne and fundraise for the National Alliance on Mental Illness.HOSA members travel a lot, too, and Buerglers chapter will go to Dallas for theInternational Leadership Conference in July. She recalled a previous, memorable trip.We got to go to Washington DC, and I [met] some congressmen about technicaleducation. So, I had to study up on legislative and funding things for career tech ed.Buergler also completed two internships while studying at HHCC, one at IU HealthOrthopedics and Sports Medicine and the other with Athletic Co-Physical% Therapy. This fall, Buergler will study biology at University of Southernm Indiana and then attend medical school, to become OH. A I PAHPRan athlete doctor. DC- *\ LCMUElATRISTAN KRISTAN, SENIORBE A KNIGHTDid you notice Senior Tristan Kristan walking around school?Hes pretty hard to miss, covered head-to-toe in his historicallyaccurate armor and visored helm. Kristan moved to Bloomingtonfrom New York just two weeks prior to this school year and noteshis transition was a little confusing. My previous school was a center school, pre-K through 12,and had a total student body of roughly 500. So, this school is atiny bit bigger! Kristan said.Kristan has always been interested in armor and the historybehind the subject. He was so interested that he decided to fundhis own suit, for which hes spent roughly $3,000. And, there areplenty of accessories to go: chainmail, chaussettes (chainmailpants), a codpiece, etc. However, he wouldnt wear the mail intoschool, as a standard suit can weigh about twenty pounds onaverage. The suit Kristan wears into school is a recreation of a stylefound in southern Germany and northern Italy and was worn duringthe crusades. He got his first suit at the start of high school, thoughhe immediately earned the money to buy more durable armor, which he has been able to make some small fit modifications to.Kristan is graduating this year and off to college studyinggeneral ed requirements, but his armored figure clankingaround Norths halls will certainly be hard to forget.15
