Habitat for HumanityBuilding to Save Livesstory by: Ellen WillibeyHabitat For Humanity is one of the most popularclubs at North. Many students each year join each yearwith high hopes of helping the community. Mr. Aiken,a social studies teacher here at North, took full chargeof the club this year. When the person who started it, Pat Wilson, retired from teaching last year, she asked me if I wouldtake over, Mr. Aiken said. I had been helping out for awhile, and working with it, and I found out that it wasa great cause, and I realized it was something I neededto do.The club at North started in 2000, with just asmall group of kids.In those first years all they did was raise a littlebit of money to help sponsor the build, Aiken said. Itgrew more and more each year, and now we raiseenough money to sponsor an entire house. The club is extremely inclusive, and anyone canjoin to help fundraise. To participate in the build, youhave to be 16, and to use power tools you have to be18. No matter how you choose to participate, you havethe comfort of knowing you are helping the communityand the people in it.Habitat changes lives. It changes the lives of thosebuilding the houses, and the family who gets to live inthe house. Being in the club means different things foreach person. For me, it means an opportunity to do somethingfor the community, and help people get on their feet,Aiken said. Its amazing the stress that comes with nothaving enough money, a safe place to live, or a warmplace to sleep. By doing habitat, we can helpone family at a time get on the righttrack. It really is aworthwhile cause.Left to Right: Bennett Lewis, Grant Collins, Braden UrbanskiWHAT IS YOUR FAVORITEmemory? My favorite memory was definitely building awall with Ramero, who is a part of the family thatwe are hosting to build the house for. It wasdefinitely my favorite memory because not onlywas I trying something new and completing areally hard task, I was building that humanconnection with all the people that we are doingthis for, and I think that is the most importantthing of all. . rl_Senior, Ping Showalter It was definitely when I got to work on theroof for the first time. It was a week after myeighteenth birthday, so it was a really greatexperience that I will always remember.Senior, Seth CantrellI remember being on the building site on topof the roof with some friends. We were justmessing around and hitting in nails. Its just agreat club where you can help people, and stillhave a fun experience at the same time.Senior, Wesley Oliver |
