The girls golf team is one of the smallest athletic teams atNorth. The team is made up of three freshman, one sophomore, one junior, and two seniors. With only seven girls, they form a special bond. Were able to connect, and its more of an individual sport, so everyoneworks in a different way, senior Kourteney Grimes said. Smaller teams dohave special opportunities that the larger sport teams may not get.It makes us closer and a better group of friends, junior LaurenStallsmith said. The coach has more time to help each individual person, freshmanRuby Sloan adds. However, with having three of the seven team membersbeing freshmen, the new players experience pressure as well.If an upperclassman doesnt play well [...] it falls back on thefreshman, and that can be a little nerve-racking, freshman Alexandra Floydsaid. Golf is the epitome of a mental sport, so it can be challenging at times, but the girls are never alone. Its not like were playing each other or against anyone else — were stilla team, so we get to help each other through it, Grimes said. Our coach hasa saying, With freshman we expect problems, with sophomores we expectless problems, with juniors we expect no problems, and with seniors weexpect to solve problems, Grimes added.Meet Our SeniorsKaleena Abrahamreflects on thechallenges ofgolf: Golf is areally mentalsport — if youthink youregoing to hit a badshot then youwill, Abrahamsaid.KourteneyGrimes talksabout her mostmemorable golfmoment: Iwould have tosay the first timeI shot in the 80son a coursecalled Smock,Grimes said.34 |
