Story andWoy: Abby AllenThis past summer, I wentwith my church, St.Charles, to Uganda. Wewere there for seventeendays, and those were thebest seventeen daysof my life. Westayed at a boardingschool there, that isfor the poorestchildren in Uganda.Almost all of the children there are sponsored by peoplefrom mainly the United States. My family and I sponsored alittle girl named Juliana. I am so proud and excited to watchher grow up. One of the things that I loved about Uganda, isthat the people there are some of the poorest people that youcan meet, but they are also the happiest people that you willmeet. While we were there, we painted a classroom and the outside of the boys dormitory. Ofcourse we played with the kids there, because obviously! We also had an outreach program, wherewe tested people for HIV and malaria. The outreach program was very gratifying, because out ofthe hundreds of people that I tested, none had HIV and only two had malaria, which shows that ourefforts to end and contain these two ailments are working. My dad came for the last week, and diddental exams on all of the kids, and went back in late October-early November to work on the olderkids teeth, before they graduate and go to secondary (kindof like high school here). Then of course at the end of thetrip, while we were heading back to the airport, we went ona safari, when in Africa, right! The trip to Uganda trulychanged my life and I willalways hold a special place inmy heart for the kids and thepeople there. I cannot wait togo back and see them all andcontinue to do work there toimprove their lives!12 |
