SUMMER ABROADO&A WITH JUNIOR LUCAS ADAMS»by Kelly FoxWhat did you have to do to get into the IU Honors Program? To begin the process, I registered to take Ills French placement test. Every potential applicant completes the testto make sure that, before applying for the program, he or she has a good baseline knowledge of the language ofstudy. After I found out that I had met the programs standards for the test, I completed their applicationmaterials, and after I was accepted, I completed their acceptance materials.Where did you go?I went to Saumur, France. Its in the Loire Valley - about a 5 hour drive southwest of Paris. It is a really beautifulcity on the river, and from my room with my host family I could see the chateau that it is well known for. I wasable to walk to school, and the weather was generally pretty good, so then I could explore the town in my freetime as well. What was your experience with yourhost family? My host family was amazing. I lived withmy host mom and dad in their row houseclose to the center of town. On severaloccasions their family came to visit, so Iwas also able to meet two of my hostsisters, my grandma, a younger cousin, and a few others. Both my host parentswere teachers in Saumur, so that mademy experience with them even better, because they were really committed tohelping me learn and making sure Iexperience as much as I could.» Adams with his host parents at the amusement park Puy de Fou> courtesy of Lucas AdamsWhat was one of your top experiences while you were there? It is really hard to pick one, but I think one of my favorite experiences was when I first got to Saumur and wenthome with my host family. They made a point of having a family birthday celebration for me. My birthday was afew days earlier, and even though they didnt know me that well, they planned something that would remind meof what families do together. We had a nice dinner, my host sister and her family was there, and they even had abirthday cake. My host parents really did include me in their family, schedule, and home routine. The specialevents and travels throughout the program were all very nice, but my favorite experiences were from living withmy host family through all sorts of day-to-day activities.» 10 |
