Breadfor Bloomington is a club that is here to help with that problem and the sponsor for this club is Mary Hill.Bread for Bloomington is a great club for those who love working with food and helping people, Hill said. We consist of a groupof students who try to make and deliver food to as many peoplewithout food as possible.Bread for Bloomington is also a good club for people who wantto help, but dont have much time to dedicate. We only meet once a month and volunteer once a month,Hill said, but sometimes we get to do these really fun voluntarycooking opportunities. At Christmas we bake delicious Christmascookies for the foodless, and on Martin Luther King Day we alwaysvolunteer to cook. One member of the Bread for Bloomington club is senior AlexLudwig. Ludwig has been a part of Bread for Bloomington sinceher freshman year.I remember walking down the hall with my friend and seeingthe poster next to me. Ludwig said. It caught my eye, and Ivebeen a member ever since.Ludwig has been a part of Bread for Bloomington for four years. Some people may not want to dedicate themselves to a club, butthey also want to help. Ludwig says that Bread for Bloomington isa good place for helping without a huge time commitment. Its great to get new help, Ludwig said. It always is, and itsunderstandable that people dont want to dedicate themselves onthe first try, but even if they dont want to stick with it, its alwaysalright to just volunteer and not attend the meetings. If they justwant to help sometimes, thats fine. At least they can help.Senior Tori Ellis also has a passion for helping the conuriunity.7ust like Alex, Ive been with Bread for Bloomington since thebeginning, Ellis said. Alex and I both actually saw the posters, andwe both thought it was a cool idea.Ludwig and Ellis both have this feeling that they want to helppeople, and both agree that Bread for Bloomington is the perfectplace to go to fulfill that feeling. After I joined, I realized how many people arent fortunateenough to have three meals a day, or even one, Ellis said. OnceI joined, I could understand that I need to appreciate what I have, because others have even less than me. —In her four years of experience, Ellis has picked up on patterns inthe people she helps and who those people are.Tve noticed that many of the people we help are veterans withvery sad pasts, Ellis said. Many of them have post-traumatic stressdisorder, and many of them have lost their families after war. Wedo help everyone who is hungry and needs food, but Ive noticedthat veterans often need support, and it makes me happy to know Ican help them.Story by Kendra Kaspar000 |
