. radriansheaSenior Adrian Sheas swimming career started when he attended a swim clinic the summer before his fifth grade. The nextyear, Shea began swimming for a club. That was seven yearsago and he is still swimming today. As a senior, he is in four varsity events: the 200-yard freestyle, the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard-freestyle relay and the 400-yard-freestylerelay. Last year both of his relay teams made itto State, and Shea shed more time in that oneseason than he had ever done before. However, that isnt the only thing that stands outin Sheas mind from that season. Over winter break,2007, Shea found that he had two stress fractures inhis back.My back had been causing pain over the summer (before junior year), but it didnt really getbad until the swim season, Shea said.He found that the pain and stress fractureswere caused by over-training and a spinalcondition. Shea was forced to take twoweeks off of swimming because of hisstress fractures. To stay in shape duringthis time, Shea did a series of exercises andslowly eased back into swimming.Although I missed several meets, I still had^/ the performance of my life at sectionals, so Icant say Im disappointed, Shea said. This year, the two free relays each havean opportunity to score top 1 6 at State as| well as break a school record, Shea said.Shea has high personal goals for Sectionals this year as well, and he also hopes thathe can get through the season without anyserious trouble from his back. But even with the injury, Shea said theNorth program played a big part in keepinghis interest. He credits Coach Dave Tanner asan inspiration and that being a member of theswim team has helped him meet more people.Shea said he will stay in the pool after leavinghigh school and plans on spending the summertraining for another upcoming season if he getsthe chance to swim in college.story by AileenDriscoll©■MontyThomasCaseyWeaverJosephWilsonrswiMMEl\150 seniors |
