Description: /^) t the beginning of the year, the poms/ / team was split into a varsity and aJ L junior varsity team, for the first time. But at tryouts coach Kristi Kluesner, the pomcoach of four years decided that two teamswere needed. At tryouts we noticed such a large number of girls with talent, and it was obvious tothe judging panel that some were very goodin technical dance, and others were goodat dancing, but lacked the technical skills,Kluesner said. For some of the girls on the team, thecreation of a second team was a good thing.Girls like junior Oshiana McWay, JV, likedhaving the different teams because it givesus a chance to improve and separates us tohelp us progress at our own pace. However there are some girls, like freshman Jayna Osborne, who still wish it was onlyone team.I dont like having two teams because being on the varsity team, I dont get to hang outwith the other freshmen on the JV team. ButI do like it because we get to work on harderdances and more technique, Osborne said. After the creation of the two teams,Kluesner stated that she loves having twoteams because the Varsity is strong sincethey are the same team plus one girl andthe JV team loves to learn. They get along wonderfully, and its beena very positive change to the program,Kluesner said. But around mid-January, things changedand about half of the poms team quit.According to both Frederick and Osborne, their coach seemed overwhelmedand was not able to give our team thetime and effort that we needed, so sheresigned and our assistant coach [ClaireHealy] took over, Osborne said. When asked about who quit, Osborne said that once Healy took over forKluesner, it was mostly Varsity girls thatquit and then there were some JV girlswho were kicked off the team. Many of the girls on the team had beenused to making decisions and some ofthe personalities just didnt mix, Osbornesaid.According to Frederick, even if theywouldnt have created the two differentteams everything would have still happened. Frederick and Osborne say thatpractices were really stressful to beginwith, but once the girls who quit the teamand the new coach took over, the tensionseized.I stayed on the team because I became close to the girls who stayed on theteam as well and I didnt want to let themdown, Osborne said.By Christa HigginsSenior Kate Fox, junior Caitlin Strobel, sophomore Nikki Ryan and junior Meghan Vint dance at half time during thefootball game against Jeffersonville.Photo by Shannon White216 poms
