Youre helpingout other people with yourmusic, Koh said.Photo by Neena ArmitageSYMPHONI, a club that mainly functions to help the elderly and the sick,is putting forth effort to help raisefunds for the Red Cross relief effortsin Haiti. After Haiti experienced a devastating earthquake, the group decided to takeon a challenge outside of their community.Junior and President Young Hoon Koh has ledthe group to focus on the here and now. Theirgoal is to raise $2,000 for Haiti relief.The total is currently at $200. Koh believesthat they have set their goal high, but not out ofreach.Several students are to carry around donationjars to each of their classes. Koh makes strongannouncements that encourage his peers todonate even if 10 cents is all that they have intheir pockets.Jane Gouker is the sponsor for the club.There are 25 people dedicated to the club.They practice every two weeks together in theband room. Three to four students play eachpiece, however this year they are working on theproduction of a group piece.The main venue for their performances is theBloomington Hospital or a local nursing home.This year Koh is stepping out of the box andshooting for the opportunity to play at the malland the public library.To quickly raise a sufficient amount of money,the group plans on doing several street performances in the spring.Its too cold right now, but when we can itsalways a great way to represent North and getthe public to see that we care about making adifference, Koh said.SYMPHONIs main purpose is community service by sharing their music with the public. Theacronym that the members came up with (ShareYour Music with People and Hospital Organizations and Nursing Homes for Improvement)explains the misspelling of the name.We got a lot of criticism for the name, but itreally ties in with our unique purpose, Koh said.We want to cure the sick emotionally throughmusic.13u Samantha Stutsmansymphoni 143■ |
