Choir offers students a chance to get sing-I / n9 experience at multiple levels.■ S Kalyn Hawkins, a sophomore, began singing thisyear and is a member of Advanced Choir.Tthe experience was avery positive one for Hawkins, who is the first person in her familyto be involved in choir.Music puts something beautiful out there for anyone to do. Youdont need talent, you just have to learn skill, and that is why music is different compared to other departments, music has something for everyone, Hawkins said.There are four different choir classes including Beginning Mixed,Concert, Vocal Jazz, and Advanced. Beginning Mixed Choir iscomposed of less experienced singers, while Advanced Choir isfor experienced singers who must audition to be considered.All choirs are taught by Louise Wohlafka who has been ateacher at North since 1999.[Students should learn from choir] a realistic self-confidenceabout their vocal gift. A knowledge of what good singing truly isand how to find it, Wohlafka said.Choir helps to uphold Norths reputation as a center for musicaltalent. The choir participates in ISSMA as well as other concerts atvarious times of the year.All the choir ensembles were entered at the highest level ofcompetition and awarded the best possible rating, gold, for theirlarge group performance. Students also received other awards insmaller groups and solos.For those involved, choir is more than just a class. FreshmanGrace Herndon, a member of Advanced Choir who has beensinging since seventh grade, believes that music can change theworld.It can change lives, connect people who would never think tospeak to each other, provide release from addiction or depression, Herndon said. Its the single aspect of life that every singleculture on Earth shares, and I think that everyone [can] be spokento through music.It only takes one song, one voice to impact others.13y Isabella D)ouglasDuring the first choir concert of the year, freshmanGrace Herndon sings one of the patriotic songsthat the class performed at the concert.
