During a Saturday Habitat work day, junior SerenaStroup begins work on a house. Work ranges fromstapling and hammering, to her favorite, painting. You can be anyone and go. Theyll have a job foryou, Stroup said.Photo by Shannon WhiteOver the past several years, NorthsHabitat for Humanity chapter hasbeen the most successful chapterin the world, making many important contributions to the local community. Not only has the North chapter built theirninth house in nine years, but it has also helpedwith the construction of five others.Norths Habitat chapter, along with the Monroe County chapter, has worked to purchase asubdivision that will be made up of solely Habitatfor Humanity homes. We [were] only co-sponsoring one, but we[provided] labor and food for five. We [were] theprimary labor and food supply, chapter sponsorPat Wilson said.Much more manpower was needed this yearsince North had to provide provisions for thehouse they had built themselves along with foodand labor for the five others in the neighborhood. In the past we only had to pick eight Saturdays, but this year we [had] to have workers forevery Saturday. Teachers, students and administration [were] very helpful, Wilson said. The biggest problem facing the leadershipteam was how to motivate people to spend theircoveted Saturdays either working or bringingfood to the workers. The hardest part [was] getting people there,North chapter co-president Sami Haddad said.Everyone gets to the meetings, a lot of peopleattend, but only 10 percent of those people actually come to work. Some people could only attend the meetingsbecause they were not old enough to work onthe house. The chapter requests that to able towork on a build site members must be at least16, but younger members can bring food for theworkers.Once you can build, it is more exciting, secretary Erica DeBruyne said.Habitat for Humanity allows the workers involved to have a place where they feel welcomeand important. We work with Habitat of Monroe County or IUHabitat. There is always a place you can be. Itreally creates a tight community, Haddad said. The North chapter feels proud about what ithas accomplished and looks forward to helpingother families in the future.Anyone who has been blessed with resources, a warm bed and fresh water, Wilson said, owes it to the community to help those that havebeen marginalized and that dont have access tothe same resources.IBy Hannah Lukemeyer82 habitat for humanity |
