•*!*mew spiritPoms have new competition, coach, captainOut with the old and in with the new is the attitude of this years poms squad. The Poms team has a new spirit this seasonwith a chance to compete at a new nationals competition, a new coach, Kristi Kluesner, and a new senior captain, AshleyStafford. The team of 15 girls attended JamFest Nationals in Cincinatti on Jan. 9-Jan. 11.Weve been to one JamFest competition, and it was a lot of fun, so were excited, junior Brenda Wilson said. For the past two years the poms went to Florida and South Carolina for Universal Dance Association (UDA)Nationals.JamFest is exciting because its new, but I dont think its as big as our competition in Florida. Im sad that we wontget to go to Florida anymore, junior Charlotte Devitt-Anderson said.Although it is only her first year coaching at North, Kluesner has past experience with Edgewood High School and teachingat her dance studio, Kicks Unlimited. She has worked with the girls, teaching them dances she created herself, as well assome learned at their UDA camp at IU during the summer.I like her because of all her experience. Weve had fewer practices, but we get more done at them, senior Ashley Staffordsaid. Our other coach liked to sit and just hang out with us.The girls have lots of positive feedback for all the changes occurring in their practices and competitions.(Kluesner) is cool, Wilson said Weve been doing a lot of hip-hop and more competitions with the same routine weretaking to nationals, so we get more practice at it.Captain Ashley Stafford has caused her own changes in the teams pre-competition activites in hopes to keep the teammore united.I write all the girls notes and leave them little gifts before every competition, Stafford said.bySamantha CapshewThe ScoreAwas• • •vs.finalJamfestNationalQualifications4thFloydInvitationalHip-hop2ndPom7thDance ExpoHip-hop3rdPom8thBloomingtonSouthInvitationalPom5thJamfestNationalsHip-Hop5thPom7th/(Top left)Senior JamieMaxwell performs anindividual dance duringsenior night.
