ay of hopeFreshman phenom sparks teamWith the number 13 emblazoned across the back of his jersey, freshman Ray McCallum proves the age old suspicionfalse - 13 is in fact a lucky number. Six-foot McCallum averages 11 points a game, starts at point guard and has helpedlead the Cougars to their first winning season in two years. Whats not lucky about that?As a new member of the Cougar basketball team and a new Bloomington resident, McCallum had high expectations forthe season.I thought we were going to have a winning season, McCallum said. I thought we were going to be good.McCallums success isnt all luck though; hard work and practice have been a key factor in this seasons triumphs andsince childhood. My dad has pushed me ever since I was little. I work out with him everyday. We do shooting drills and I lift weights,he said. My mom comes to all the games and films them and then me and my dad go over them. For seniors Donte Thomas and Gant Elmore, McCallums fast success wasnt a surprise.I think hes doing pretty good, Thomas said. I kind of expected it.Co-captain Elmore agrees.Hes added a new dimension of athletism to our team that weve never had before, Elmore said. He can do things onthe court that not many people can do.McCallum knows that he has received a lot of support from the seniors and admits that they have even made him a betterplayer. The seniors have always been supportive, McCallum said. They make me better. I want to get my free throw percentageup and I want to improve my all around game. And I want to beat South.by Gaby DiPrimioThe Score>was• ••vs.finalShelbyvilleL 56-59Bedford NorthLawrenceW 70-63EdgewoodL 46-51PerryMeridianW 71-59PlainfieldW 54-49SouthportL 55-58JeffersonvilleW 62-57ManualW 50-39BloomingtonSouthL 34-75Owen ValleyW 61-58MartinsvilleW 70-56NorthviewW 61-58LawrenceCentralL 46-50FranklinCentralL 32-40ColumbusEastL 40-41PikeL42-47FranklinCommunityL 56-78ColumbusNorthW49-45BloomfieldW 48-43New AlbanyL 45-48SectionalBloomingtonSouthL 60-33y(Top left) Sophomore JakeMulinix dribbles downthe court in the sectionalgame versus BloomingtonSouth.
