Description: Freshman LedStory by Ruby KohlerAlthough freshman Amanda Holdman hadtwo injuries this season and was one of theyoungest gymnasts on Bloomington HighSchool Norths team, she competed at thevarsity level in every event and was a leadingscorer. The events included, beam, floor, andvault, but bars are her favorite.I usually score the highest (on bars),Holdman said.Holdman has been doing gymnastics sinceshe was 9 years old. She started because hermom was a gymnast too. Before she came toNorth she was a part of Wrights Gymnasticsand took classes at Rising Star.Holdman said Norths gymnastics wasmuch more relaxed than at Wrights or RisingStar, but the hardest part about being afreshman is getting used to the way thingswork at North. Her favorite part of the sport is being withthe team, and she looks up to the seniors.Theyre just role models, Holdman said.Gymnastics coach Megan Volrich agrees. My seniors were great leaders, Volrichsaid.Holdmans two injuries this season set herback some, but she continued to compete. She broke a growth plate in her foot and thedisks in her back were popping out. However, her good attitude and hard workkept her competing.(Holdman) wont accept anything less thanher hardest, Volrich said. She never quits.Holdman and Volrich conditionedeveryday and worked to make sure shedidnt continue to get hurt.Injuries are hard things to preventbecause every event uses every muscle,Volrich said. (Holdman) had to be honestwith me when it hurt too bad to compete.Holdman is also a North cheerleader, butto make next years season better she planson training hard over the summer. No one thought wed get to regionals,we overcame that and a lot of injures.-Samantha Lee, sophomore (pictured right)Senior Erin Arnold loses herbalance while dismounting.
