Friend or FoeStory by Lindsay Cheseak and Kelsey ButcherNo one usually thinks of friends when thesubject of North and South schools is athand. The only thing that comes to mindwhen these two schools come togetherwould be competition and rivalry. For some students who have friends atSouth there is a rivalry.(My friends) are in sports, and I dance (onthe pom squad), North sophomore CharlotteDevitt said.A lot of North people assume that kidsfrom South are rich folk, South juniorGaven Owens said. But me, myself, Imjust an average middle-class American. Butyes, there is a lot of rivalry. On the other hand, rivalry doesnt existfor some students.(My friend) hates South and wants to cometo North, North junior Ashley Stafford said. The rivalry is mostly demonstratedthrough sport-related events because theseare the only high schools in Bloomington,so there is a lot of competition.Sometimes there is the North is betterthan South or vise versa being said, but thecomments are usually all in good fun andno one takes offense. Many students with friends who attendSouth meet in elementary or middle school, which is the basis of their friendship. It is easierto keep their friendship going because theyhave known each other for so long.Junior Nico Brancolini thinks it is easy tokeep close friendships because there isplenty of time on weekends to see them.Countless students have had maintainedtheir friendship through sport relatedactivities and clubs. There are many different extracurricularactivities invloving North and Southstudents that help keep interests alive. When coming together in order toaccomplish a task, there is no such thing ascompetition. The students are excited tospend time together, and they dont let thesmall fact of not attending the same schoolget in the way.The activities involving both schools notonly help keep students at peace but helpsthe community as well. Its easy tokeep closefriendshipsbecausethere isplenty oftime onweekendsto seefriends.9-Nico BrancoliniJunior*MIsev ButcherNorth senior Amy Worster andsophomore Jackie Street talk toSouth junior Kristy Cartwrightand Youth leader Jenny Heshan.North junior Darby Hannon talksto South sophomore TrevorWhitaker at the North-Southvolleyball match.IVorth.South Friends 11 |
